Although American values place a high importance on the individual, conformity is still evident in everyday life. By conforming, people lose their individuality. Thus, the ideas and aspirations of the individuals are blended together with that of the collective. People like to think that they are unique, but in reality, most people are only comfortable being followers. For that reason, people are naturally conformers. They find it acceptable to remain as conformers rather than step outside of society’s image. For instance, in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, we find conformity at its greatest. People are trained from childhood to get married to men who meet society’s strict standards. They choose to marry for wealth and social status, rather than love and happiness. For instance, Charlotte Lucas is a prime example of one who scarifies her individuality to conform to society’s expectations. Conformity is a product of time, and thus each generation will experience conformity differently and at different extremes of the spectrum.
